At HydraEarth Network, we are proud to spotlight individuals who are making meaningful contributions to sustainability.
Today, we’re excited to highlight Mathis Wackernagel, the Co-Founder at Global Footprint Network, Board Member at rePLANET and Sustainability strategist, whose wealth of experience and passion for the environment are helping organizations across industries become more sustainable.
Who is Mathis Wackernagel?
He is a pioneering sustainability expert best known for co-creating the Ecological Footprint concept, a revolutionary metric that measures humanity’s demand on nature against what the planet can regenerate. As the President of the Global Footprint Network, he has dedicated his career to advancing sustainability metrics and advocating for policies that align economic and ecological realities.
Wackernagel approaches sustainability from a biological perspective, recognizing that humans are deeply embedded in, and inextricably dependent on, the biosphere.
His work highlights how understanding Earth’s biological constraints is crucial for ensuring long-term economic and environmental stability.
Key Contributions
● Ecological Footprint Concept: During his doctoral studies at the University of British Columbia with Professor William Rees, Wackernagel co-developed the Ecological Footprint, a tool that helps businesses, governments, and individuals quantify their environmental impact. This metric is now widely used to assess ecological overshoot and guide sustainability strategies. (Global Footprint Network)
● Global Footprint Network & Earth Overshoot Day: As the co-founder of the Global Footprint Network, Wackernagel has played a leading role in tracking humanity’s resource consumption. His work led to the creation of Earth Overshoot Day, the date each year when human consumption exceeds Earth’s ability to regenerate resources. This initiative has been instrumental in raising awareness about the urgent need for sustainable policies. (Earth Overshoot Day)
● Biological Approach to Sustainability: Unlike many sustainability experts who focus solely on industrial and mechanical solutions, Wackernagel’s biological perspective underscores that sustainability is non-negotiable for long-term economic success.
“Accepting our one Earth as our context makes any of our bets more winnable. It also reveals the significance of a healthy web of life and emphasizes that energy and food systems will only be able to deliver if compatible with the regenerative capabilities of our planet.” -Mathis Wackernagel
His work challenges the outdated view of sustainability as a ‘noble cause’ and instead presents it as an economic necessity. By reframing sustainability as a self-interest issue rather than a collective burden, he encourages cities, countries, and companies to take immediate action rather than waiting for global agreements.
